PALMYRA — During the final season of the Wayne-Finger Lakes league tournament in 2025, the Palmyra-Macedon Red Raiders football team defeated the Lyons/Sodus Lions in the league championship game at Mynderse Academy. The two sides met once again to begin the 2026 season. But, it was a different outcome this time around.

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America through executive order has been the subject of a host of jokes on social media and late-night TV. For many, though, it’s no laughing matter. The detractors include U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Rochester-area Congressman Joe Morelle, D-25 of Irondequoit, who are sponsoring bills that would prohibit Trump from renaming Lake Ontario and the other Great Lakes.

PENN YAN — The Yates County Tourism Grant Program is accepting applications for 2027. Organizations, municipalities, and businesses with projects that promote tourism and draw visitors to Yates County are encouraged to apply. The application process has been updated to improve clarity and ease of use. All applicants must use the new 2027 application form, which is available at www.yatescountyny.gov/265/Tourism.

CANANDAIGUA — Becker’s Hospital Review named F.F. Thompson Hospital to its 2026 list of “100 Great Community Hospitals.” According to the Chicago-based medical industry trade magazine, the hospitals on the list are chosen based on nominations and insights from rankings and ratings. They cannot pay for inclusion. Thompson made this list twice before, in 2023 and ’25. It’s the only hospital in New York to be included this year.

SENECA FALLS — Town Justice Steven Kelley has resigned. Elected as one of two town justices in 2024, Kelley was chosen recently by Mike Passalacqua, Republican candidate for Seneca County sheriff, as his undersheriff. Kelley is a Democrat and a retired state trooper. Supervisor Frank Schmitter told the Town Board Sept. 1 it had three options regarding the vacancy: Ask the 7th Judicial District to appoint someone to the position until the fall election.

CANANDAIGUA — University of Rochester Medicine Thompson Health has welcomed board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner Dixie Kendall to the Canandaigua Medical Group’s Obstetrics/Gynecology locations in Geneva and Canandaigua. Kendall, a resident of Lyons, has more than 20 years’ experience in nursing. She most recently worked as a bedside emergency department charge nurse at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.

President Trump’s unilateral decision to direct U.S. federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” is an affront to the Indigenous peoples of the region, specifically the Haudenosaunee, of which the Cayuga are a part of along with the Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, and Tuscarora. Shame on the New York county sheriffs who have filed a lawsuit against Gov. Hochul’s “Local Cops, Local Crimes,” which was passed by the NYS legislature and prohibits NYS law enforcement from entering 287(g) agreements and aiding federal immigration agents. You are supposed to be protecting our communities, not help ripping them apart. A recent WXXI article published on Sept. 1 reports that records show ICE arrests across upstate New York have doubled in recent months.
