This well-attended concert opened with Australian composer Melody Eötvös’s short work The Deciding Machine, a tribute to women’s suffrage and the pioneering computer work of Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron’s daughter. Composed in 2020, The Deciding Machine had its premiere the following year in Wyoming, which gave women the right to vote in 1869. It is a tuneful, driven, ascending piece. The Deciding Machine was followed by Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, one of the glories of the repertoire.
Comparative Analysis of Pressure Drop (Δp): Hemodynamic Performance of Three Commercial Oxygenators During Cardiopulmonary Bypass
1 Introduction Oxygenators are critical components of Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) circuits, as their structural architecture directly influences the mechanical forces exerted on the blood, playing a significant role in hemolysis [1-3]. Shear stress is generated as blood is pumped through the fine fibers and narrow pathways within the oxygenator [4].

The Marriage of Figaro
Sydney has had its coldest July in decades, and the rain it raineth every day, but this did not deter operagoers from savouring two further offerings in the winter season: a fine revival of what must rate as one of Opera Australia’s best Mozart offerings, and a new production of Antonín Dvořák’s melodious fairy tale. ABR Arts last saw David McVicar’s production of La Nozze di Figaro in 2015. This was in Melbourne, soon after the Sydney première, which Michael Halliwell reviewed.
Michael Hofmann reviews ‘Attention, Please!’ by Peter Rose
Peter Rose, the editor, for just under a quarter of a century, of these pages, has put down his scissors and pot of glue to turn seventy (in June) and step back into civilian life. Coincidentally or not, he has also just put out another book of poems, Attention, Please!, his first since The Subject of Feeling in 2015. The new title – a softened imperative – speaks aptly and cannily for the contents. Continue reading for only $10 per month. Subscribe and gain full access to Australian Book Review.

So, what was McBride's life like, before he became Australia's whistleblower?

Is a great property reckoning coming Australia’s way in FY2024?
Wind the clock back four years and commercial property in San Francisco, the highly priced city at the very epicentre of the global ICT industry, was hot, hot, hot. Office space was at a premium and shopping precincts were bustling, busy places. In the absence of an irrecoverable act of God, it was easy for investors to assume the status quo was immutable. Oh, what a difference a global pandemic makes.
The Impact of Drugs on Hydrogen Sulfide Homeostasis in Mammals
Abstract : Mammalian cells and tissues have the capacity to generate hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) via catabolic routes involving cysteine metabolism. H2S acts on cell signaling cascades that are necessary in many biochemical and physiological roles important in the heart, brain, liver, kidney, urogenital tract, and cardiovascular and immune systems of mammals.
Why developing software tools inhouse is a risk that commercial property businesses can no longer afford to take

In many Australian property businesses, analysts using outdated software programs and models continue to hold sway.
Hell and high water: How Australia’s steady stream of natural disasters will push ESG onto the property agenda

Situational intelligence in this crazy medtech world

May 26th 2020: Class I manufacturers, are you ready?
Peter Rose, managing director Europe at Maetrics writes for Med-Tech Innovation News. With the fast approaching end of the EU MDR transition period (May 26th, 2020) manufacturers need to ensure their products meet the new requirements by the deadline or risk restricted EU market access.
GUEST EDITORIAL: A MISGUIDED GAME PLAN
Fair or unfair, specialty retailers today are living with the reality that the brands we helped build are selling direct-to-consumer. We nurture and grow it; they reciprocate by tapping into the pipeline that feeds us so it also can feed them. In my opinion, this strategy weakens the entire industry, sapping strength like any parasitic diversion of resources. The practice is rampant, it is rife, and it is embarrassingly misguided.

European Medical Device Regulation: The Compliance Advantage
Nobody is in any doubt that the new European Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR) is on the agenda of compliance professionals in the medical devices industry. But is it far enough up on their priority list? Early compliance to the European Medical Device Regulation—the outline of which was finally published in the Official Journal of the European Union on May 5, 2017—is crucial if manufacturers are to maintain access to EU markets, which in aggregate are economically larger than the United States.

4 options for spindle repair programs
If a spindle breaks down, what is your company’s plan of action? Is it the most practical and efficient way to deal with a down spindle? Spindles need maintenance at varying intervals, based on the length and design of their operation. Normal use of any machine will cause wear and tear, the spindle being the component that receives the majority of the wear. It is necessary for them to run at the right speeds and feeds to keep the wear minimal.
Medical design adhesive selection simplified
St. Paul, Minnesota – Adhesives play a critical role in the success of a medical device, whether it’s holding the device together or adhering it to the wearer’s skin. But with so many adhesive products available, it can be a challenge for design engineers to know which one is right for their project. To help bridge this critical gap, 3M developed a Find My Adhesive product selector tool to help make medical adhesive selection a simpler process. “Adhering medical devices can be a difficult task.

Peter Rose: Secrets of the Ancients?. New Left Review 103, January-February 2017.
In his latest book, the Stanford classicist Josiah Ober has taken on the ambitious task of analysing a vast swathe of Greek history, from the collapse of Mycenaean civilization to the death of Alexander—precisely the period most admired by those who have devoted any time to the study of Greek antiquity. Ober’s book falls within the large category of celebratory works about ancient Greece (Werner Jaeger’s once-popular multi-volume Paideia, for example).
Olson gave so much to Des Moines
As one of so many who was fortunate enough to have known and befriended Richard Olson, the news of his passing is tragic. To the others who also lost loved ones, and are grief-stricken, our prayers and wishes for peace are with you all. The city of Des Moines was blessed by his pugnacious will to improve our community. He asked little and gave so much. You will be remembered as a revolutionary force of change and fortitude when we needed it, Dick.
In defence of book reviewers in Australia
Book reviewers and the editors of periodicals that commission them are used to sour assessments of their worth, but Professor John Dale’s article on The Conversation yesterday is in a class of its own. What a clichéd, ungenerous and discreditable overview of book reviewing in this country, with its sentimental and predictable coda about mythic Manhattan standards. Professors should do their homework – like critics. Reviewing, Dale states, is not financially rewarding.
