Make Your Own Natural Pest Control Spray with Herbs
Looking for a simple, natural, and effective way to deter pests? This pest control spray will encourage critters to move elsewhere and leave your garden alone! Here’s how to custom mix a pest deterrent spray of your own using common herbs from your garden. There are many things we want in our gardens—blooming plants, pollinators, and sunshine, to name a few. Likewise, there are many things we don’t want spending time in our gardens.
Stunning New Animation Transforms Deep-Sea Mapping Data of an Underwater Oasis
MBARI scientists partner with visual effects artists to shed light on the splendor of Sur Ridge An underwater oasis—lush with corals and sponges—lies submerged just 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Point Sur on California’s Central Coast (Figure 1).In 2013, after many years spent mapping Monterey Bay and its environs, MBARI and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists discovered this majestic deep-sea garden, 800 meters (2,600 feet) below the ocean’s surface, atop a...
Family Traditions: Holiday Cookies
Posted on December 12, 2020 by Sonoma Valley Sun Home chefs share their seasonal favorites with The Sun’s Leslie Nicholson Baking cookies for the holidays encompasses so much more than just baking cookies. Thumbing through a recipe box can be emotional, like it was for me when I was searching for recipes from my mom and grandmas. I found notes and handwritten recipe cards that mean so much to me.
Hurricane Irene Sets Record for Most Expensive Disaster Year
Mother Nature has plans to stir up more trouble over this Labor Day weekend. Hurricane Katia continues to churn across the Atlantic while something that looks suspiciously like a nascent tropical storm brews off the coast of Cuba. That’s just the latest in a summer full of extreme weather: Domes of heat across the central and eastern U.S.; Dust Bowl-like levels of drought in the Central Plains; flooding and beach erosion caused by Hurricane Irene along the East Coast.
Our Shared Seas Website Provides Critical Summary of Ocean Health
The Our Shared Seas project provides an important reminder that our Earth is fundamentally a blue planet. The ocean covers 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, provides over three billion people with a critical source of protein, and plays a critical role in our climate system.
Ocean overlooked when it comes to climate change
A growing majority of Americans now understand and accept the scientific basis of climate change: The carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases we release into the atmosphere are making our planet warmer and our weather more destructive. Here in California we are painfully aware that the risk of wildfires, drought and more powerful storms comes hand in hand with climate change. But there’s another side of the issue that gets too little attention.
Climate change: A triple threat for the ocean
September 25, 2019 MBARI scientists have seen changes in deep-sea communities over the last three decades. For example, Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) and sergestid shrimp populations appear to be shifting with climate change. Image © 2019 MBARI. The ocean headlines these past few months have been unsettling.
Opinion | What’s Killing Pacific Whales?
Emaciated gray whales are washing ashore dead. Scientists are trying to solve the mystery. By Heidi Cullen, Andrew DeVogelaere and John Ryan Drs. Cullen, DeVogelaere and Ryan are scientists. June 22, 2019 MONTEREY BAY, Calif — Tourists come here from around the world to watch whales. It’s common to see humpbacks leaping out of the water and fin whales slapping the waves with their flukes. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a gray whale poking its head out of the water to scope out the surroundings.

Think It’s Hot Now? Just Wait (Published 2016)
July wasn’t just hot — it was the hottest month ever recorded, according to NASA. And this year is likely to be the hottest year on record. Fourteen of the 15 hottest years have occurred since 2000, as heat waves have become more frequent, more intense and longer lasting. A study in the journal Nature Climate Change last year found that three of every four daily heat extremes can be tied to global warming. This map provides a glimpse of our future if nothing is done to slow climate change.
Why author Terry L. Anderson is all wrong about the urgency of climate change
As fast as the ice shelves melt and the waters continue to rise, there are still those given a platform to keep their head in the sand. In his recent Fox News op-ed for Earth Day, Terry L. Anderson accused the Emmy-winning documentary series, “Years of Living Dangerously,” of being scientifically inaccurate in its stark portrayal of the dangers posed by carbon pollution. As climate change experts and the chief science advisors to the series, not only do we disagree, Terry is just plain wrong.
Opinion | What Weather Is the Fault of Climate Change? (Published 2016)
Op-Ed Contributor March 11, 2016 LIKE politics, weather can be a contentious subject, especially when you throw climate change into the mix. One view holds that no single storm or drought can be linked to climate change. The other argues that all such things are, in some sense, “caused” by climate change, because we have fundamentally altered the global climate and all the weather in it.
The Climate and Weather: Heidi Cullen's NY Times OpEd
Like politics, weather can be a contentious subject. Opposing views on the relationship between climate change and extreme weather have led to confusion and debate. One holds that no single storm or drought can be linked to climate change. The other argues that all such things are, in some sense, “caused” by climate change, because we have fundamentally altered the global climate and all the weather in it. While true, this “all in” philosophy doesn’t adequately emphasize the fact . . .
Attribution of the record high Central England temperature of 2014 to anthropogenic influences
The CMIP5 analysis largely follows the methodologies of Lewis and Karoly (2013, 2014) used to study Australia's record hot 2013 annual and summer temperatures. Here we outline the exact methods applied in the model analysis. Annual temperatures anomalies were calculated (relative to a 1961–90 climatology) for the 1900–2005 period for the historical and historicalNat simulations from 14 climate models (see table 1).
Climate Change Education Through TV Weathercasts: Results of a Field Experiment
TV weathercasters are well positioned to educate Americans about the relationships among weather, climate, and climate change. Through a collaboration involving TV meteorologists, climatologists, and social scientists, we produced a series of educational segments to assess the impact of such an education. The educational segments were branded “Climate Matters” and aired over one year during the nightly weather segment on WLTX TV (Columbia, South Carolina).
Opinion | Sizzle Factor for a Restless Climate (Published 2011)
ENJOYING the heat wave? The answer is probably no if you live in Abilene, Tex., where temperatures have been at or above 100 degrees for 40 days this summer. It’s been a little cooler in Savannah, Ga., where the mercury hit 90 or more for 56 days in a row. Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma are coping with their driest nine-month stretch since 1895. Yes, it has been a very hot summer after one of the most extreme-weather springs on record.
