The San Francisco Chronicle is a newspaper serving primarily the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It was founded in 1865 as The Daily Dramatic Chronicle by teenage brothers Charles de Young and Michael H. de Young.[1] The paper is owned by the Hearst Corporation, which bought it from the de Young family in 2000. It is the only major daily paper covering the city and county of San Francisco. Source

HOUSTON (AP) — St. Louis minor league pitcher Richard Fitts had season-ending surgery this week to repair an injury to his right lat that landed him on the injured list earlier this week. “Long term prognosis should be good,” Cardinals’ president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said Friday. “We’re confident he’s going to bounce back and be just fine but, he’s not going to pitch again this season.” Fitts was 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA in three starts for Triple-A Memphis this season.
Coventry returns to the Premier League after hard-fought draw at Blackburn
BLACKBURN, England (AP) — Coventry City clinched a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001 after drawing at Blackburn Rovers 1-1 in the Championship on Friday. Frank Lampard’s men were second best for much of the game but one point was enough to secure a historic return to the top tier. Blackburn winger Ryōya Morishita put the home side ahead after 54 minutes but Bobby Thomas equalized six minutes from time to the delight of the visiting fans.

2 Alaska-based soldiers injured in encounter with brown bear during training exercise
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Two U.S. Army soldiers have been injured after encountering a brown bear in a mountainous training area in Anchorage, the military said Friday. The incident happened Thursday as the soldiers were participating in a “land navigation training event” in Arctic Valley, part of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson’s training area. The soldiers were receiving medical care as of Friday, a military official told the Anchorage Daily News.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The Vancouver Canucks fired general manager Patrik Allvin on Friday after missing the playoffs for a third time in four seasons with him in the position. President of hockey operations Jim Rutherford is keeping his job. Rutherford acknowledged he has to shoulder some of the blame for how the Canucks tumbled to the bottom of the NHL standings. Allvin made his own decisions as GM, Rutherford said.
Crosby most likely to become head coach, Nylander most fashionable according to NHLPA poll
TORONTO (AP) — Sidney Crosby is seen by his peers as the NHL player most likely to become a head coach, according to the National Hockey League Players’ Association’s annual player poll released Friday. The 38-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins captain topped the category with 10.3% of the vote, followed by Minnesota’s Nick Foligno at 5% and Detroit’s David Perron, Toronto’s John Tavares and Calgary’s Ryan Strome at 2.6% or lower.
St Pauli concedes late penalty to tie at home with Cologne
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Karol Mets scored his first Bundesliga goal and conceded the 1-1 equalizer with seven minutes left as St Pauli missed the chance to snap a six-game winless streak against Cologne on Friday. St Pauli had the best of the chances but was beset again by a familiar failing in the final third that has made it the league's lowest scoring club. It wasn’t until the 69th minute that Mets put it ahead with a header.
