Timeless, Infamous, Alive: Walking Canal Street
Canal Street is a symphony of chaos. Commuters blare their horns as they try to elbow their way into or out of Manhattan. Tourists haggle with street vendors over the price of handbags and sunglasses as pedestrians weave their way through the dense humanity on the sidewalks. It can feel as if all the desire and desperation of the city — the madness, the magic, the mess — can be found on Canal.
They Fought the Battle of Brooklyn, After a Bus Ride From New Jersey
It was the night before a re-enactment of the Battle of Brooklyn, but efforts to teleport to the past had already begun. Even so, compromises were made. The campsite was not in Brooklyn, but at the Alpine Scout Camp in New Jersey. And when a bottle of contemporary cider was offered, its cap was painstakingly removed with a bayonet. But the time for libations was short.
The New York of The Past Is Still Visible Today.
New York is a city of reinvention. It’s where you move if you want to start over, forget your past and create a new identity. It embraces modernity with skyscrapers and 5G towers dotting its blocks. But traces of New York’s past are still around, peeking through the pavement and glass in the forms of old streets, trees, fences and buildings.

New York City’s Most Patient Soccer Fans Are Ready for the Party
New York City’s Most Patient Soccer Fans Are Ready for the Party The great agony of the World Cup, for its most ardent fans, stems from its scarcity, like if Christmas came only every four years. That gap between tournaments — mulling missed chances, craving the high of competition, awaiting the opportunity to do it all again — can feel interminable. So imagine the angst of those forced to wait even longer than that.

The Ultimate ‘It’ Spot in Caracas? A Marriott That’s Seen Better Days.
From the outside, the J.W. Marriott in Caracas looks fairly run-of-the-mill: a 17-story tower of exposed brick situated in a once-sizzling, now sleepy, financial district. But slip inside its cavernous, air-conditioned lobby, and it’s obvious this isn’t just any hotel.

NYC Is Still Covered in Grimy Snow and Ice. Will It Ever Melt? Original
On Riverside Drive in Upper Manhattan, an anonymous artist drew hearts on the snow-covered windows of every parked car for four or five blocks. It was a magical moment, that first blush of the Blizzard of ’26, when automobiles and fresh powder provided a medium for exuberant expression, both human and, let’s face it, canine. Children screamed with joy; alternate-side-parking rules became considerations for another time. Then life happened.

When Pastor Sergio Amezcua realized in early December that Donald Trump’s decision to send federal agents to launch an anti-immigration operation in a city (Minneapolis) and a state (Minnesota) with a much lower percentage of migrants than in other, Republican-led states was imminent, he told his assistant: “We have to prepare. We’ll have to help the families; let’s send a message on social media.” Amezcua thought that about 10 or 20 people would sign up.

Year 1 of Trump’s Immigration Crackdown: ICE Raids, Deportations and Protests Original
Americans were inundated, first slowly and then all at once, with videos of masked agents, seemingly everywhere, rounding up immigrants — on parks and sidewalks, in parking lots and construction sites, in farms and factories. Todd Heisler/The New York Times Todd Heisler/The New York Times Todd Heisler/The New York Times In just 11 months, about 500,000 people would be deported in an unrelenting campaign celebrated by those who saw it as long overdue and lamented by those who saw it as inhumane.
