Before they have even finished their anatomy and physiology courses, they are sent to patients’ bedsides with a teaching physician and asked to come back with a written account of what happened there: what the patient said, what was observed and, in due course, as they gain experience, what diagnoses might explain the patient’s symptoms and what might be done to treat them.
