Mother Horror’s Guide to Dark & Disturbing Fiction in 2025
Reading Companions, I have finished writing my book, Feral & Hysterical: Mother Horror’s Ultimate Reading Guide to Dark and Disturbing Fiction by Women (August 19th, 2025), and with my newly available time, I’m determined to catch up on previously released books I missed while keeping up to date on as many new titles as I can. Through it all, I will report my experience to you here, at The Lineup, at the end of each month. A monthly wrap-up, if you will. My personal reading journal, shared.
Helena Echlin on Mommy Shaming and Instaperfect Lies
When my kids were little, I knew a momfluencer who rescheduled her kindergartener’s birthday party because the light wasn’t right for photos. I laughed, but underneath was jealous, because she clearly had the world’s most easygoing child. Mine would freak if I rescheduled a trip to the park, let alone a birthday party. I always knew that society judges mothers, but it wasn’t until I had children that I realized how much moms judge each other, and how much social media amps up the stress.

How to Say Pho
Dear Helena, I always pronounce the Vietnamese soup pho as “foe.” My friend says I’m being culturally insensitive and should make an effort to get it right (she says it’s “fuh”). But people always understand me, so what does it matter anyway? —Fuhgeddaboudit Dear Fuhgeddaboudit, Diane Cu, cocreator of the blog White on Rice Couple, says that Vietnamese words are tricky because Vietnamese is a tonal language, with “four or five” main tones and many more regional ones.
Should You Tip on Takeout?
Dear Helena, About once a week, my girlfriend and I order sushi from a place on the next block. We pick it up since it’s so close. And every week we have the same argument: Should we tip? My girlfriend says no. She is a generous tipper in other respects (with cabdrivers, masseurs, and restaurant servers). She tips when someone delivers the takeout. But in this case, she says, “All they have to do is bring it to the counter.
Reform School for Tightwad Tippers
Dear Helena, I tip about 20 percent on meals, including alcohol and taxes. One of my closest friends (and frequent restaurant companion) typically tips about half the amount I do, and doesn’t believe in tipping on alcohol or tax. I think he is cheap and uninformed but otherwise a great guy. What would you recommend? —Respect Your Server Dear Respect Your Server, You’re in the right: The diner should tip somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of the final total, including alcohol and tax.
