The South African Policy Uncertainty Index (PUI) reached a record worst level in the second quarter 2026. The North West University Business School PUI worsened to 81.9 in the second quarter from 77.8 in the first quarter and 64.9 in the fourth quarter. The graph is based on data provided by the North West University Business School. The baseline of 50 was set in 2015 and a reading above 50 indicates policy uncertainty, while one below 50 shows improved policy certainty.

South African PMI slips in June

The South African manufacturing purchasing manager’s index (PMI) slipped to 47.3 in June from 50.8 in May. The April 2026 reading of 52.6 was the first time since September 2025 that the Bureau for Economic Research (BER) PMI rose above the neutral 50-point mark.

South African household finances ease in second quarter

South African household finances eased in the first quarter compared with the fourth quarter. The South African Reserve Bank Quarterly Bulletin data showed that this was because real personal disposable income growth slowed. Additionally, employment fell, and net wealth eased from the fourth quarter. Household debt increased at a slower pace in the first quarter of 2026. Growth in most categories of credit extended to households slowed.
