Introduction Cutaneous and deep sensations have some surprising interactions. The addition of tactile information during proprioceptive tasks provides a reduction in proprioceptive error: tactile cues reduces end-point error in matching tasks, continuous movement tasks, and point-to-point movement tasks (Lackner and Dizio, 1994; Tillery et al., 1994; Rao and Gordon, 2001). Even postural sway can be reduced by light tactile information that offers no mechanical support (Rabin et al., 2008).
