1 Introduction A technological revolution has recently impacted all aspects of public and private life. This has given rise to the information society (Castells 2002), which has equipped people with the essential twenty-first century skills necessary for various aspects of life. Additionally, technological tools are necessary to solve every day and work-related problems (Care, Griffin, and Wilson 2018).

As an education economist whose research focuses on education inequality, the phrase 'Quality of life for a fairer society' led me to a deeper reflection and understanding that education is key to tackling many of the illnesses in our society. A society that wants to promote economic growth, health, fairness, equality, and social justice must invest in education over the life course.
