In 2025, a meta-analysis of 10 studies suggested a potential protective effect of metformin against age-related macular degeneration (AMD)1; however, a large-scale study reported no association.2 We therefore examined the association between metformin use and AMD among patients with diabetes in the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases (SEED) cohort, which represents a multiethnic Asian population, and replicated the analyses in the UK Biobank.
