Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I published my first freelance piece in a newspaper at fifteen years old.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I inherited my grandfather's Remington Noiseless Model Seven. I use it whenever I want to write without the distraction of the internet.

How is social media changing news?

We are creating and consuming more content than any other generation in history--this is the golden age of journalism!

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I think clearest with a pen and paper. A phone call is still the most effective research method. I am also fluent in web design.

Why did you become a journalist?

I believe any culture is just a shared set of stories. I write to share the things that excite me about our world and our future.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

As an English teacher, I mentored a high school newspaper; my students taught me a lot.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I am most proud of the story I pitched, researched, and wrote: "These Electric Trucks Are Inspiring A New Breed Of Motorhead."

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write about what you love and work will never feel like work!

What's your favorite drink?

I couldn't write without my morning coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

You can find me in my barn working on a truck or motorcycle.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

I wish more automotive journalists called out vaporware. Critical thinking is necessary for all journalism.
