Slowfoam – Night Rider

There is a surprising shift halfway through “Through the Damp Canyons,” a collaboration with saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi and the opening number from Madelyn Byrd’s newest album as Slowfoam. The song starts out recognizably enough, its gentle pads melding with field recordings to create layers of ambient beauty. But a few minutes in, things take a turn. The saxophone begins to consume the stereo field over increasingly loud feedback.

Sarah Davachi – The Will of Tongues

“Canto Duo,” the second song on composer Sarah Davachi’s latest album, is a case study in minimalism. For over nine minutes, Davachi plays chords on a slightly detuned organ that gradually changes in texture and timbre—and the effect is heartbreaking. The slow undulation of the organ becomes more and more melancholic as the song progresses, playing out like the imaginary soundtrack of a montage scene from a profoundly sad movie.

Sleep D and Mosam Howieson – Syphon Filter

It’s hard to talk about Sleep D or their Butter Sessions imprint without diving deep into their cuter-than-cute backstory. (For those curious, I recounted the tale earlier this year when I reviewed the three-disc victory lap the label released to celebrate its 15th anniversary.) But at this point in the game, we can probably set aside their suburban childhood and refrain from mentioning the duo’s early forays into disco and house.
