7 Books That Take Readers to Extraordinary, Uncharted Regions
Henry Wise recommends Willa Cather, James Hilton, Tim Winton, and more I find myself drawn to stories that incorporate mystery through little understood places, wildernesses, or unmapped regions. Quite often, these realms host the supernatural, and, at the very least, allow for deviations from what might be considered normal.
PROMISED LAND | Kirkus Reviews
A bravura and sometimes brutal novel about our efforts to cope with darkness and denial. In this intense sequel to Holy City (2024), struggling deputy sheriff Will Seems investigates a strange disappearance in Virginia’s Snakefoot swamp that cuts across racial, blood, and historical lines.
Holy City
EDGAR AWARD WINNER FOR BEST FIRST NOVEL OF THE YEAR "Holy City is an amazing piece of work. A Southern novel that examines the pathos and ethos of small-town life and the weight of both grief and hatred. Love it."--S.A. Cosby No one innocent. No one free. Nothing sacred.
WoroniThird Year Blues - Woroni
On the night of the 1st of September, a category 2 cyclone hit Melbourne. I was alone in my parent’s house, lying high and awake in my childhood bed. Checking my notes app the next day, I noticed that I’d written something. “It’s two forty-five in the morning. I’m alone in my childhood home, and I’m a little scared.” I used to love storms. Far From Home: Exile in Fiction
In my novel, Holy City, Will Seems returns from living “in exile” in Richmond, to his family home in Southside, Virginia, to face the two great tragedies of his past which have laden him with a guilt that both drives and suffocates him. He is incapable of living in exile any longer, and yet home promises little relief. Furthermore, his time in Richmond makes him an outsider both in Richmond and in Southside, where people are suspicious of anyone with a foreign perspective.
Summary and Reviews
Excerpt Holy City FIRE WAS THE DREAM that broke him. He sat stiff as a dead cat, felt for the handle of his pistol under the seat, relaxed. The sad night came back to him, one of many like it, riding indefinitely, listening to the angry word of God through a thin static distance, the voice somehow both austere and intimate, seeming to speak directly to him with piercing certainty.
