Risk of transferability and variable absorption of topical testosterone creams in children and adolescents

Testosterone creams and gels (compared to topical patches or parenteral formulations) are associated with an increased risk of inadvertent transfer to close contact women and children, and thorough counselling on safe use in adult men and adolescent boys is critical to prevent this. Testosterone from topical preparations can remain in the skin for months after application, and sampling for serum testosterone should not occur through exposed skin.
