To realize such a conversion, we used nonlinear phononics.
Early postoperative factors associated with in-hospital mortality after emergency noncardiac surgery: A Japanese nationwide registry-based intensive care unit cohort study | Scientific Reports
Abstract Emergency noncardiac surgery carries a substantial risk of death, yet factors influencing outcomes immediately after surgery remain unclear. We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of adults admitted to intensive care units immediately after emergency noncardiac surgery between January 2020 and December 2023, using data from the nationwide Japanese Intensive Care Patient Database (JIPAD) registry. Among 18,781 patients, 2,233 (11.9%) died during hospitalization.

Cybernetic Mobility X: The Cambrian Explosion of a New Era
1. Introduction The electrification of mobility is ushering in a "Cambrian Explosion" – a period of rapid diversification and innovation that echoes the biological explosion of life on Earth 530 million years ago. Cybernetic Mobility X (CMX) lies at the heart of this transformation, promising to revolutionize not just transportation, but the very structure of industries and communities. 2.
Orbital hybridization of donor and acceptor to enhance the conductivity of mixed-stack complexes - Nature Communications
Abstract Mixed-stack complexes which comprise columns of alternating donors and acceptors are organic conductors with typically poor electrical conductivity because they are either in a neutral or highly ionic state. This indicates that conductive carriers are insufficient or are mainly localized.

TEPCO Power Grid's initiative to homeostatic regulation of a cyber-physical social system: MESH to spread the Industrial Revolution like wildfire across the globe.
The energy transition to carbon neutrality, exponentially advancing digital technologies such as AI, blockchain, and 5G, and the ongoing population decline in some countries are significantly and rapidly transforming the energy industry. The fourth industrial revolution, dubbed "Society 5.0" in Japan, has already begun, and its realization will require the transformation of utilities through digitalization. There is a strong interdependence between the power grid and the digital infrastructure.
Learning on Diversity from Rainbow Country Mauritius
(Read in 🇬🇧 English 🇯🇵 日本語 🇪🇸 Español 🇫🇷 Français 🇧🇷 Português) "Oh, you lived in a resort country!" That was the typical misunderstanding I kept hearing when I said I lived in Mauritania since 2018, as many people thought it was MAURItius, a country also known as "rainbow country" for its diversity. And after years of this MAURI*** dichotomy in mind, I finally visited Mauritius, which was truly amazing.
A generalized distribution interpolated between the exponential and power law distributions and applied to the walking data of the pill bug (Armadillidium vulgare)
Abstract The Lévy walk, a type of random walk in which the frequency of linear step-lengths follows a power-law distribution, can be observed in the migratory behavior of organisms at various levels, from bacteria and T cells to humans.

JCM | Free Full-Text | Diaphragm Dysfunction and ICU-Acquired Weakness in Septic Shock Patients with or without Mechanical Ventilation: A Pilot Prospective Observational Study
Abstract : Sepsis is a risk factor for diaphragm dysfunction and ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW); however, the impact of mechanical ventilation (MV) on these relationships has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to compare the incidence of diaphragm dysfunction and ICU-AW in patients with septic shock, with and without MV.

Frequency and clinical features of radiographic head injury caused by inpatient falls: a single-centre retrospective cohort study
Characteristics of the study cohort During this study, 2908 cases of inpatient falls were reported. Of these, 261 were non-hospital falls (eg, outpatients, emergency and patient’s family), 65 occurred in patients aged <18 years and 1748 did not result in a head injury. Finally, 834 head injury cases were included in the analysis, including 662 confirmed and 172 suspected cases, where the patient was found with a bruised head but was not interviewed about the fall (figure 1).

Coronavirus Chased Off Tourists-Lots of Locals Don’t Want Them Ever Flocking Back
KYOTO, Japan—The bustle of tourists has disappeared from this ancient capital—only to be replaced by dissension over whether they should ever be welcomed back. Mimiko Takayasu, 80 years old, is proprietress of a century-old tea house where geisha entertain wealthy Japanese with traditional music and dance. Until the coronavirus pandemic, the streets of Gion, Kyoto’s high-end entertainment district, were packed with amateur paparazzi trying to get snapshots of apprentice geisha called maiko. ...
The Way of the Shogun
Tony Perrottet; Photographs by Hiroshi Okamoto The forest trail I was hiking into the Kiso Mountains of Japan had the dreamlike beauty of an anime fantasy. Curtains of gentle rain, the tail-end of a typhoon in the South China Sea, were drifting across worn cobblestones that had been laid four centuries ago, swelling the river rushing below and waterfalls that burbled in dense bamboo groves.
This Tokyo Town Can’t Give Away Houses
TOKYO—Kazutaka Niijima is in charge of giving away houses in Tokyo. It isn’t as easy as it sounds. On a recent morning, Mr. Niijima visited one of his properties, a century-old wooden house on a hillside. As soon as he entered, he started vacuuming tiny dead bugs scattered on the tatami mats. A colleague picked up a broom to help. Mr. Niijima works for the mountainous town of Okutama, which makes up one-tenth of the land area of Tokyo but has just 5,100 people, half as many as it did in the 1970s.

F10BINOL-derived Chiral Phosphoric Acid-Catalyzed Enantioselective Carbonyl-Ene Reaction: Theoretical Elucidation of Stereochemical Outcomes
An F10BINOL-derived chiral phosphoric acid was shown to be an effective catalyst for an enantioselective carbonyl-ene reaction of 1,1-disubstituted olefins with ethyl glyoxylate as the common enophile. The perfluoro-binaphthyl skeleton is beneficial not only for adopting high catalytic activity but also for creating an effective chiral environment for enantioselective transformations. Indeed, the reaction afforded enantio-enriched homoallylic alcohols in high yields with high enantioselectivities.
The prognostic performance of qSOFA for community-acquired pneumonia
The present study is the first to compare the prognostic performance of qSOFA with existing pneumonia severity scores (CURB-65 and PSI) for CAP of high severity and mortality that requires hospitalization. Regarding hospitalized CAP, the prognostic performance of qSOFA for in-hospital mortality did not significantly differ from the existing pneumonia severity scores (CURB-65 and PSI). Furthermore, no significant difference was observed in the prediction performance for ICU admission.
Murine double minute 2 predicts response of advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma to definitive chemoradiotherapy
Background Definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT) has recently become one of the most effective therapies for the treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, it is also true this treatment has not been effective in all patients. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the surrogate marker of dCRT in order to improve clinical outcomes of patients with ESCC.
