1 INTRODUCTION Since the 1960s, streams have become among the most threatened habitats on earth because of human impacts (Dudgeon et al., 2006; Reid et al., 2019). Land-use and climate change, introduced species, overfishing, construction of dams and channelisation, and pollution by contaminants and microplastics, are all major threats to stream ecosystems (Allan, 2004; Hester & Gooseff, 2010; Reid et al., 2019).
