And neither has denounced the super PAC spending on their behalf, either. The topic of outside spending came up during a wide-ranging debate hosted by BronxNet in partnership with City & State, which was recorded Monday and will air Tuesday night.

Already, Espaillat had begun to form his uptown political alliance, mentoring candidates and boasting about how many mayoral hopefuls came to the Indian Road Cafe to court his support and the support of a growing Dominican voting bloc. Espaillat would lose to Rangel, just as he had two years prior.

As I climbed the stairs to the nosebleed seats at the New York Liberty’s home opener last month, I ran into congressional candidate and former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander descending with his kids. “You know the mayor’s here?” he said, high fiving me as a fellow fan. Turns out I’d caught Lander leaving the game at halftime, which he sent several texts justifying: They had an important birthday party to attend, and the Liberty were way up by the end of the first half anyway.
