Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Unpaid: KZSU-FM Stanford; reporter > News Director. Paid: KENI-TV (now KTUU) Newschannel 2, Anchorage, Alaska; reporter/anchor.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
In the early days of CNN, we used portable manual typewriters in the field. The scripts were couriered with tapes to bureaus or feed points.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Can't think of any.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Asking unsettling questions without fear or favor. Valuing facts and evidence, especially when uncomfortable.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By e-mail, though I can't remember the last pitch I used. Too many of my own questions I want to look into.
Why did you become a journalist?
I was majoring in physics at Stanford & working at KZSU radio. I realized covering science meant more variety, fewer grant applications.
