Council announces resilience funding for flood recovery projects

BANNER ELK — The Banner Elk Town Council held a special meeting on Tuesday, May 26, to announce millions of dollars in resilience funding aimed toward Hurricane Helene recovery projects in western North Carolina. The funding comes after an appropriation of $20 million was made by the North Carolina General Assembly toward resilience projects and flood mitigation in Helene-impacted communities.

Community gathers to honor fallen service members during Memorial Day ceremony

NEWLAND — Following a rainy Memorial Day weekend, sunshine broke through the clouds while residents, veterans and guests gathered at Avery Square to honor fallen U.S. service members during Avery County’s annual Memorial Day ceremony, hosted by Newland’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Pat Ray Post 4286. The ceremony was opened as the Avery JROTC posted the colors upon the gazebo, followed by a word of prayer from Rev. Larry.

Banner Elk kicks off Memorial Day weekend with annual Art on the Greene festival series

BANNER ELK — Despite a rainy Memorial Day weekend, colorful pottery, fine art and live music lit up the front lawn of the Historic Banner Elk School during this year’s opening show of Art on the Greene. The two-day event was held on May 23 and 24, where more than 40 hand-selected local and regional artists showcased their fine art and unique handmade goods to the community.
