Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! I own one.

How is social media changing news?

Well a lot of news circulates on Twitter, which means that headline editors have a tough job.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Katherine Plumber from Newsies or Kit Kittredge.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means taking the time to investigate issues and recount events so that the public can stay informed about the world around us.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I use Adobe Audition and/or Audacity to edit audio that I collect with either a Zoom microphone or my iPhone's voice memos app.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter

Why did you become a journalist?

I like to find things out and tell other people about them. This is a way to put that curiosity to good use for the most people.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I edited writing, which was sort of a mix between copyediting and general editing.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm most proud of the 4-part pandemic podcast that I worked on with my team. It helped our campus process a lot of stressful events.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Using the podcast to promote a specific firm. Not part of our journalistic mission!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Baking or riding my bike.
