Just one day into the extreme heat warning issued by the National Weather Service, Evanston is feeling the effects of high temperatures and humidity. In an email to the RoundTable, City of Evanston spokesperson Cynthia Vargas wrote that the Evanston Fire Department has already begun to receive calls about heat-related emergencies as the Chicago area faces heat indices over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Early Tuesday, the National Weather Service extended the heat warning through Thursday night.

Evanston is under an extreme heat warning issued by the National Weather Service Chicago starting at noon Monday through Wednesday, July 1. Kevin Birk, a meteorologist with NWS Chicago, said the sudden change from cool summer temperatures to extreme heat is because of a change in the weather pattern. “It’s now allowing just a deep amount of heat and humidity to basically be transported straight out of the Gulf of Mexico and really into the lower Great Lakes region here,” Birk said.
