Hope Morawa

The first time I remember seeing it was in the kitchen of my sister’s apartment, scattered in the old porcelain sink, with two bags worth of ice and a bottle of Fireball. It wasn’t the red and white longnecks I’d come to love, but cans of green and brown camouflage celebrating the start of deer season. I grabbed one and cracked it. It was to be the first beer at an otherwise unremarkable college party. Still, it was the first time I tasted what would soon become my favorite- Lone Star.

To All The Bars I’ve Drunked Before is a weekly ode to our favorite Brooklyn bars and their impact on our lives. This week’s piece is contributed by Hope Morawa. An Infamous King Tai Bathroom Selfie Circa 2017 King Tai was the first bar in Brooklyn that ever felt at home. A few blocks from my friend’s apartment, I spent my Summer of 2015 in New York traveling from Harlem (where I lived) to Crown Heights (where they lived), after my roommate abandoned me to go perform in some musical out of state.

Bar Great Harry via. Instagram I don’t really like absolutes, so when I say that I believe drinking is a sacred practice, I’m only mostly serious. For being someone friendly and approachable, I am actually pretty particular about certain things. For example, I don’t like going out to bars in groups. I prefer to go with one other person and completely focus my attention on my conversation with that person and being present for them. Because of this, I prefer all bars to not have televisions.
