Scaling UK mobile coverage for all Original
From the buzz of Cheltenham Festival, to the thrill of SailGP, to the unforgettable final Oasis gigs at Wembley last weekend, 2025 goes to show that EE’s network continues to underpin the UK’s iconic moments. Given the value people put on staying connected, our vision for EE – the UK’s best network – matters more than ever.
A New Roaring 20s for Networks
By Howard Watson , Chief Security and Networks Officer, BT Group The 1920s saw huge technology-led developments in the areas of mass production, transportation, connectivity and electrification, each bringing profound changes for citizens, businesses and society. Often nicknamed 'the roaring twenties', this period began with the consequences of war, a post pandemic period, high inflation and high interest rates.

BT Group appoints the inaugural fellows under pioneering Tech Fellowship Programme
BT Group is at the forefront of connectivity and innovation in the UK. If we just look at the past few months, we’ve announced a technology breakthrough to meet growing customer demand for live TV, we’ve demonstrated network slicing capabilities for mobile gaming and video conferencing and we’ve conducted a Microsoft Teams call using a quantum optical radio receiver in what we believe to be a first.
Why delivering on the Shared Rural Network matters
You’ve secured tickets to a major game at Wembley but you’re running late as you dash for the Underground. While BT Group can’t control the tubes, we’re getting closer to controlling the mobile signal across the tube network.
Dialing-down the number of telephone exchanges as the UK gets ready for a digital, full fibre future
As customers gradually switch from copper to fibre networks and as landlines go digital, the number of local telephone exchanges, which have kept the nation connected for over a century, will reduce from c.5,600 today to just 1,000 by the 2030’s. Fibre networks require less equipment, are more efficient and can connect more customers from fewer exchanges.
Ofcom statement is a step in the right direction for more sustainable networks
This week, network data will have showed a spike of usage on mobile masts alongside the UK’s motorway network, as passengers navigated, gamed and streamed away the hours during the half term getaway. Whether it’s road tailbacks or the crush on the morning commute, we’re all used to the challenges of travel at peak times. We strive to avoid the same kinds of congestion on digital networks, despite also experiencing periods of exceptional demand.
5G - Standing out in Standalone
EE has been running the UK’s best mobile network for a decade, since we were first to launch 4G in 2012. For the last four years, that’s included the UK’s first 5G network too. Relentless investment in our rollout means we’re on the way to meeting our target of enabling a 5G connection anywhere in the UK by 2028, through a combination of permanent coverage or on demand solutions.
A busy week for the UK is a busy week for BT…keeping the country connected during major events
For just over a week in May, the eyes of the world were firmly cast upon the UK as it played host to two events which generated substantial domestic and global interest. The first of these was the Coronation of King Charles III – a grandiose affair steeped in tradition on Saturday 6th May, then brought into the 21st century by a host of pop royalty the following day in Windsor.
Technology changes to improve the UK’s digital infrastructure
“For those of you watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green” Digital technology never stands still but to access its transformative benefits depends on two essential criteria; the quality of your network and the type of device you use. BT Group is building networks like fury. Through Openreach, our full fibre connections have now passed 10million homes, 40% of the way to the 25 million we’ve pledged to deliver.
Bringing the action closer to the customer with new content delivery technology
Have you ever wondered how your online purchases get to your home so quickly? How with the ‘click of a button’ your package arrives within a couple of days, sometimes even on the same day? Probably not - as consumers we don’t need to know how things get done ‘behind the scenes’. But for a retailer, this needs to be a well-thought-out plan that is quickly and consistently executed. Behind every delivery person’s ‘knock on the door’ your package will have gone through multiple ‘mini- journeys’.
BT : How BT Group is making our networks more energy efficient
By Howard Watson, Chief Security and Networks Officer , BT Group In the current climate, the efficient use of energy has never been so urgent. BT Group consumes nearly 1% of the UK's electricity so how we use it is critically important. A leader on climate action for 30 years, we have a long-term plan. In December 2021 we launched the BT Group Manifesto setting out how we'll accelerate responsible, inclusive and sustainable growth over the next decade. We've made great progress.

FCC plans to free up C-Band for 5G While the spectrum is used largely for satellite communications by the Department of Defense, the commercial sector has been eyeing that band as perfect for 5G technologies. By: Nathan Strout 9 hours ago To test 5G, the Pentagon will look at ‘smart warehouses’ Select companies will test 5G technology at four U.S. military bases in 2020 as part of an ongoing effort. Department of Defense leaders expect to release new testing opportunities each quarter.
To tackle 5G, the key will be collaboration
At the Mobile World Congress in Los Angeles in October, the Department of Defense unveiled plans for several 5G testbeds that have the potential to revolutionize how the government shares radio spectrum, trains service members and moves materiel around the nation and the world.
Collaboration the Key to Resolving Spectrum Skirmishes
By Sal D’Itri and Howard Watson The first major spectrum skirmish of the 5G era in the U.S. has broken out over a technical and critically important question: Will 5G networks utilizing spectrum in the 24 GHz band cause harmful interference to weather radars? On one side of the issue are government users including National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA, and on the other the Federal Communications Commission and by extension, mobile carriers and network operators.
