There are very compelling reasons to use a full-text search based on an inverted index and a relevancy scoring model. In my experience, the best reason is when you're actually trying to perform a Search function and expect the first result to be the most relevant. That is exactly why search engines were built, and I'll assume that's your main use case. Secondly, the inverted index may be superior to classic database indexes in some cases, but remember that it's not its primary purpose.
