1 INTRODUCTION Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that affects the retina and underlying choroid. Its prevalence lies at 8.7–11.6% of the global population and increases with age (Rein et al., 2022; Wong et al., 2014). It occurs in people over 55 years of age (Guymer & Campbell, 2023), and a recent meta-analysis has found a pooled prevalence as high as 25.3% in Europeans over 60 years old (Li et al., 2020).
