Abstract Engineering the genetic code restricts DNA transfer (cellular bioisolation) and enables new chemistries via non-standard amino acid incorporation. These distinct properties make recoded cells state-of-the-art safe technologies. However, evolutionary pressures may endanger the longevity of the recoding.
