Impact of an integrated monogenic and polygenic risk assessment on Tier-1 conditions in a real-world cohort
Abstract Tier-1 conditions, including breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers and coronary artery disease, have been characterized primarily in patients with hereditary phenotypes but are also common in the general population, partly due to polygenic contributions.
Can Stress Curb Unethical Employee Behavior? Evidence From Frontline Contexts
1 Introduction Frontline service work is rife with moments of stress: overflowing queues, angry customers, and unexpected service failures (Zhang et al. 2024). In such situations, employees may cover mistakes, cut corners, and even deflect responsibility as the way to deal with immediate work pressures.
Germline genetic risk and prostate cancer–specific mortality in a population-based incident cohort
Abstract Multiple germline variants are associated with prostate cancer (PCa) susceptibility and aggressive features; however, their value for predicting prostate cancer–specific mortality (PCSM) at the time of diagnosis remains uncertain, particularly among men with clinically localized disease. We evaluated associations between germline risk factors and PCSM among 14,644 men with incident PCa in the UK Biobank.
A sequential MAP kinase cascade regulates mechanical signalling
Abstract Plants respond to mechanical stimulations like wind, touching or wounding to safeguard their development and survival. Mitogen Activated Protein Kinases (MAPKs) activation by mechanostimuli was reported 26 years ago, but the upstream regulatory mechanism and function remained unknown. We report that mechanostimulation activates a MAPKKK3/4/5-MKK4/5-MPK3/6 cascade within 60 seconds, leading to induction of ~800 genes, encompassing most of the early touch response.

As ICE and other federal agencies continue their assault on civil liberties, local leaders are stepping up to protect their communities. This includes pushing back against automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, which are tools of mass surveillance that can be weaponized against immigrants, political dissidents and other targets. In recent weeks, Mountain View, Los Altos Hills, Santa Cruz, East Palo Alto and Santa Clara County have begun reconsidering their ALPR programs.
Swallowable expandable fibrous capsules for nonendoscopic sampling of esophageal cells
Abstract Esophageal adenocarcinoma is a highly lethal malignancy with a 5-year survival rate of only 18.8%, largely due to late-stage diagnosis in the absence of effective population-wide screening. Survival improves to 42.9% when detected at a localized stage (I/II). More than 90% of esophageal adenocarcinoma cases are diagnosed without prior identification of Barrett’s esophagus, its only known precursor.
Improving Melanoma Risk Stratification of Skin Color Type by Polygenic Scores of Skin Color and Melanoma
1 Introduction Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. In 2025, approximately 104,960 new cases of melanoma are expected to be diagnosed, and 8430 deaths are anticipated due to the disease [1, 2]. The 5-year survival rate is significantly higher for patients with Stage I melanoma (98%) compared to those with Stage IV melanoma (35%), underscoring the importance of early diagnosis through screening to reduce melanoma-related mortality [2].
How You Start Is How You’ll Proceed: Using Examples From the Fashion Industry, Is Path Dependency a Barrier to Sustainable Business Model Innovation?
Abstract Strategic choices made by a successful firm, combined with the unique situation surrounding its origins, may determine how well it can adapt to the challenges of sustainability. Sustainable business model innovation (SBMI) may be necessary when pursuing a competitive advantage, yet, paradoxically, what got the organization its initial success may prevent it from achieving needed innovation.

0.01% Atropine Eye Drops in Children With Myopia and Intermittent Exotropia
October 1, 2025 By Nguyen Nguyen, MD, and Huy Tran, MD, PhD The underlying mechanism for myopia progression is uncertain. However, evidence supports the hypothesis that a lag of accommodation during near work can induce hyperopic defocus. This, in turn, triggers axial elongation.1 In intermittent exotropia (IXT), additional accommodative convergence is required to maintain binocular vision and ocular alignment.

Pathogenic variants (PVs) in BRCA2 are a major cause of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome, a condition characterized by a significantly increased risk of developing breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancers [3].
Opinion: How language assistance in voting made a difference in San Diego
Late last month, the Trump administration dismissed all cases in which the U.S. Department of Justice sought to enforce the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965 and removed all the senior attorneys directing the Justice Department’s voting rights work. The Voting Rights Act, perhaps the single most effective civil rights law this country has ever passed, has been rigorously enforced under Democratic and Republican presidents. Until now.

This study applied known SNPs for AAA and CAD to improve AAA risk stratification for screening and prognostication.
How To Educate School Nurses to Grow Your Myopia Management Practice
February 1, 2024 By Vittorio Mena, OD, MS Following the school nurse’s evaluation, it is up to the parents to find an eye care practitioner to get a comprehensive eye examination for their child. The only problem is that statistics show that 67% of students who fail a vision screening do not go and get an eye exam. Of our five senses, the last one anybody would want to lose is their vision. Ironically, though, it tends to be the last thing people think about, especially regarding children.

Accommodation is Unrelated to Myopia Progression in Chinese Myopic Children
September 1, 2023 By Huy Tran, MD, PhD & Xuan Nguyen, MD, MSc Although the underlying mechanism for myopia progression is uncertain, evidence supports the hypothesis that a lag of accommodation during near work can induce hyperopic defocus, which in turn triggers axial elongation.1,2 Indeed, children and young adults with myopia have been found to have a higher level of accommodative lag for the same stimulus distance than emmetropes.3 However, the relationship between accommodative lag and...
Establishing a new standard of care for calculus using trials with randomized student allocation
Research Article CALCULUS INSTRUCTION Science 31 Aug 2023 Vol 381, Issue 6661 pp. 995-998 Calculus instruction needs substantial transformation because it is often a barrier to STEM degree attainment, especially for traditionally underrepresented groups (1–3), depriving both individuals and society of the potential benefits of their inclusion. National calls for calculus transformation are numerous (4, 5), because failing calculus can contribute to a student’s departure from STEM degree programs.
