Guidelines recommend assessment of cardiac function following an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) since reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is associated with increased all-cause mortality and hospitalization from heart failure within one year of an ACS event. Studies demonstrate strong positive correlations in LVEF assessment when comparing transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) to left ventriculogram (LVG), suggesting that performing both in an in-patient setting might be redundant.

Gender differences in utilization of the heart function clinic: are women with heart failure receiving equal access to care?

Background In 2018, we conducted a retrospective chart review of patients admitted to the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, to explore the gender differences in HF mortality. This study showed that women were less likely to be referred from the ER to the Cardiology service compared to men. Building on this, in 2020, we explore whether there is a gender discrepancy in access to multidisciplinary Heart Function Clinic (HFC) in a tertiary centre.
