1 Introduction Dioecy is a common strategy in alpine and arctic plants, particularly among early-flowering species, with approximately 20% of species having male and female individuals (Molau 1993). Differential consumption of male and female plants by herbivores, or sex-biased herbivory, has been suggested as a potential evolutionary force in the development and maintenance of dioecy in natural communities (Ashman 2002).
