Ian Frazier is a staff writer at The New Yorker. He has been contributing to the magazine since 1974, when he published his first piece in The Talk of the Town. A year later, the magazine ran his short story “The Bloomsbury Group Live at the Apollo.” Since then, he has published numerous short stories and nonfiction, Shouts & Murmurs, and Talk of the Town pieces in the magazine. He is the author of eleven books, including “Great Plains,” which began as a three-part Reporter at Large series for …

Mark Singer, who contributed to this magazine as a staff writer for fifty-two years, died of cancer, at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan, not far from his apartment, on June 19th. He was seventy-five years and eight months old, to the day. He started out writing pieces for The Talk of the Town, then moved on to humor, personal essays, and long reported stories, some of which were collected in books or became whole books themselves.

On the Front Lines of Delaney Hall, ICE’s Newark Prison

Delaney Hall, a thousand-bed privately owned ICE prison in Newark, is in the city’s industrial lowlands. Its address, 451 Doremus Avenue, makes it seem like an entity with physical limits, but that’s not how it looks to passersby, unless they are in the air, taking off from or landing at Newark Airport.

It used to be called the Roberts Institute for Living, but everybody knew that it was the insane asylum, and that’s what people called it. A few years ago, its board decided to accept reality and change the name to Bob’s Insane Asylum. In the past, patients generally came to the asylum themselves. They would become insane and show up on their own, or a relative or somebody would bring them in.
