Abstract Sports performance is a multifactorial concept determined by the interplay of physical, technical, tactical, and psychological factors. While its measurement is straightforward in metrical sports (e.g., athletics or swimming), it is more complex in team or aesthetic disciplines. In recent years, the role of oral health has gained attention as a potentially modifiable factor influencing athletic performance.

It is our great privilege to guest edit this special Themed Issue on Sports Dentistry. We have brought together an ‘elite' team of experts with significant and unique experience in this field. Our aim is to provide a foundation relevant to all those interested in sports dentistry, including dental professionals, elite athletes and, of course, the ‘weekend warrior'.

Abstract Aims Multiple studies have identified that dental caries, periodontal diseases and erosive toothwear are common in elite athletes and possibly more prevalent than in non-athlete populations.
