Nokefest returns with riverside music, custom local art

Nokefest begins its second year Friday at Garrett Farms in Salem, on the western edge of Roanoke County near the Glenvar area. The three-day festival features performances along the Roanoke River through Sunday. The festival features a lineup of regional and touring acts across two music stages, along with wellness activities, comedy and family programming. Attendees arriving at the festival grounds this weekend will see a new landmark at the entrance.

Virginia Tech study finds pet dogs outperform humans in spotted lanternfly searches

BLACKSBURG, Va. — A Virginia Tech study suggests ordinary pet dogs could become an important tool fighting the invasive spotted lanternfly, with trained dogs finding more than twice as many egg masses as experienced human searchers in some field tests. The spotted lanternfly has spread to 19 states and threatens vineyards, orchards and forests.

National D-Day Memorial marks 82nd anniversary with tribute to advocate Lucille Hoback Boggess

Bedford’s National D-Day Memorial will commemorate the 82nd anniversary of D-Day on Saturday with a ceremony honoring the Allied landing at Normandy and remembering Lucille Hoback Boggess, a key advocate behind the memorial who died earlier this year. The ceremony also marks the 25th anniversary of the National D-Day Memorial, which opened in Bedford in 2001.
