Out with the Old, In with the New
Categories: New horror films are banking on familiarity to draw in audiences October 7, 2026 Hollywood has spent years betting on what audiences are accustomed to, whether it’s through producing sequels and remakes, or casting recognizable stars. The Death of Nonchalance
Categories: The era of effortless detachment is over; authenticity is cool again. October 8, 2025 As the days get longer, so does the list of trends that define them. In 2024, you couldn’t miss the “Brat” green smeared nationwide, enriching presidential campaigns and popularizing “messy girl” fashion. While this summer was hard to pin to just one sweeping trend, its many current affairs pointed towards one overarching theme — authenticity.

Ian Rogers · Follow 9 min read · -- Can we learn to love our new Commander in Chief? Doubtful. Can we get to a place where we can coexist? Maybe. I’ve given this election cycle a lot of thought. From how unfit our new leader of the free world Mr. Trump appears in the news to whether or not Biden or Harris were really the best candidates the Democrats could have offered the last two election cycles. But here’s the thing.

By Ian Rogers Byron Bay’s iconic yellow Waverider buoy, a crucial tool for monitoring real-time wave conditions, is set to be redeployed later this week after undergoing urgent repairs by coastal engineers from the Manly Hydraulics Laboratory (MHL). The repair timeline remains weather dependent. The buoy has been offline since early November after its antenna was snapped, halting the transmission of live wave data vital to the North Coast region.

NSW Irrigators’ Council CEO Claire Miller said further water buybacks must be paused immediately until an independent audit gives the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) the all-clear.

The music industry could learn a few lessons from blockchain
I spent twenty years building digital music applications and businesses, most recently Beats Music and Apple Music, previously with Yahoo!, Winamp, Topspin and Beastie Boys. Today, I work at Ledger and espouse the utility of crypto instead, so I’m often asked the question, “What about music on the blockchain?” “Meh,” is my standard response.
Seeking a better way for local government insurance
Every year, local government authorities spend hundreds of millions of pounds buying insurance. In contrast, central government departments spend next to nothing, retaining their risks instead. Why this mixed approach to insurance across the UK public sector? And is there a better way? In this blog, I set out to answer these questions. I’ll draw on my own experience as a director of the Local Government Mutual (LGM), an initiative from the Local Government Association.

Germany will order 30 F/A-18 Super Hornets and 15 EA-18G Growlers, the report added.
Go Fish
A team of psychic investigators are assigned to examine the grisly death of a night watchman in an abandoned fish processing plant. I The old warehouse stood at the edge of the water like a sentinel watching the lake. A darkhouse instead of a lighthouse, its purpose not to guide ships in safely but to warn them away on penalty of death, destruction, and even worse fates. The car pulling onto the property heeded no such warning. The people inside were used to ignoring cautions of this type.
Why I Worked Unpaid Overtime for Two Years
Rocking the boat always came with risks. When I first started working, the rules were simple: I worked, I got paid a set amount per hour, and if I worked more than 40 hours in a week, I got paid time-and-a-half for overtime. If my job was busy, I worked more and made more money, and if it was slow, I didn’t work as much and made less money. Time and money formed a quid pro quo.
Amersham CC's magnificent run comes to an end
THE juggernaut that had become Amersham CC, with nine wins from nine, hit a brick wall at lowly Thame last Saturday and dented their promotion hopes. Some unusually loose bowling and some good batting by Thame enabled the home side to reach a respectable 205 all out, which ought to have been a target well within the reach of the Amersham batsmen.
Amersham squeeze home in derby against Gerrards Cross to keep promotion hopes alive
In form Amersham CC made it nine wins in a row in Saturday's derby against Gerrards Cross – but only just, with five runs the winning margin. After opener Luke Jackson fell for 22, only Bruce Friderichs was able to build an innings, his score of 75 coming at almost a run a ball and saving Amersham's skin. Only Rob Viney, with 24, and Matthew Chapman, with a vital knock of 22 at number 10, made it out of single figures as Amersham suffered a middle order collapse.
Amersham beat title rivals to cruise into promotion places
Sri Lankan stunner Maduka Liyanapathiranage took a season's-best seven-wicket haul as Amersham cruised into the HCPCL Division Two promotion places for the first time on Saturday. Even though Amersham had won their last seven games, the gap on leaders Oxford had stubbornly refused to narrow over recent weeks, but this changed dramatically when they defeated their title rivals by six wickets to make it eight in a row.
Atlas of Interest: On the Hidden Life of Marginalia
"We have all seized the white perimeter as our own," wrote Billy Collins in "Marginalia." (When I first read the poem, I dutifully scored the passage with a checkmark in my copy of Picnic, Lightning - surely a meta-marginal inscription if there ever was one.) Collins's words, jubilant, even triumphal, may strike the seasoned marginalist as overly dramatic, if not absurd; however, lest we forget, the tyranny of "the white perimeter" is not easily repealed in those whom it has been cultivated.

Real survive massive Schalke scare
Madrid - Holders Real Madrid survived a huge scare when they lost 4-3 to Schalke 04 in the Champions League but squeezed into the quarter-finals 5-4 on aggregate thanks to record European marksman Cristiano Ronaldo. Coming hard on the heels of a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao in La Liga last weekend, the loss to a battling Schalke side did nothing to dispel the impression Real have lost their way and they were whistled off the Bernabeu pitch by their angry fans.
[GUEST POST] Ian Rogers asks, ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’ + Contest!
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? I’ve always been a fan of connected stories, the kind that share the same characters and/or locations. I think of these stories as being part of a “silent series.” They usually aren’t directly related, and the connections aren’t strongly emphasized, but they greatly enhance the reading experience for those who spot them. I think the reason people enjoy connected stories is because it’s like putting together pieces of a puzzle you didn’t know existed.
The Year of Wonders
1. "We're closing in on a deal," my agent told me on the phone. "I'm just turning him upside-down now and shaking him for loose change." It was midday on a Monday in early August of the year 2000. The Nasdaq, rested from its breather in the spring, was sprinting back up over 4,000 toward its March peak. Vice President Gore, demolishing the Bush son's early lead, was pulling even in the polls.
