1 Introduction The concept of hydrological connectivity states that water is a vector of matter, energy and organisms across different environments (Bracken et al. 2013; Freeman et al. 2007). Riverine waters, in particular, play key roles in facilitating this connectivity along the land-to-sea continuum, transporting nutrients, organic matter and (micro)organisms from upstream into coastal zones (Frigstad et al. 2020; LeBrun et al. 2018; Xenopoulos et al. 2017).

1 Introduction Accurate observation of suspended particulate matter concentration (SPMC) typically requires combinations of one or more optical turbidity and acoustic sensors with gravimetric measurements of filtered water samples (Bux et al., 2019; Fettweis et al., 2019; Sutherland et al., 2000). This is because both optical turbidity and acoustic sensors indirectly measure the backscattered signals of an optical beam or the acoustic backscatter as a proxy of SPMC.
