4 DISCUSSION Karyotype, genetic abnormalities, and patient-related factors are of prognostic importance in patients with AML. Among patient-related variables, a highly relevant factor is the presence of cardiac co-morbidities. However, it is extremely difficult to estimate the risk of developing heart failure during chemotherapy in individual patients. The use of certain biomarkers, such as NT-proBNP may represent a way to explore this risk.
