Dynamic Risk Assessment for the Development of Persistent Atrial Fibrillation Using Statistical and Machine Learning Approaches
1 Introduction Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most prevalent sustained cardiac arrhythmia, is a significant and escalating global health concern (Linz et al. 2024). In 2019, the worldwide prevalence of AF was estimated at 59.7 million cases, reflecting a substantial increase from previous decades (Linz et al. 2024). Projections indicate a continued upward trend, with cases in the Americas expected to reach 15.9 million by 2050 and 17.9 million in Europe by 2060 (Linz et al. 2024).
How to Criticize Israeli Policy Without Inadvertently Feeding Antisemitism
The other day I sat in on a focus group of Democratic voters that included a discussion about Israel and Gaza. There was plenty of criticism of Israel. That wasn’t surprising. Poll after poll shows that Democratic voters have become far more critical of the Israeli government, particularly the devastation in Gaza and now the war with Iran. What stuck with me wasn’t the criticism itself. Rather, it was how a handful of participants – not a majority, but enough to notice – described Israel.
Build a Palestinian State
In recent months, the U.S.-Israeli relationship has been subjected to unprecedented scrutiny from all sides. Forty Democratic senators voted to block an arms sale to Israel in April because of the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, Iran, and Lebanon, a vote that would have been unimaginable only a year earlier.
The Security Case for a New Israeli Approach to the Middle East
When I talk to Israeli policymakers and friends about the Palestinian issue and Israel’s broader approach to the Middle East, I often hear the same response: “You are a naive American. You don’t understand our security concerns. You don’t understand the Middle East and you don’t live here.

America Has No Good Options in Iran
Three weeks into the joint U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, the outlines of a familiar and dangerous pattern are emerging. The current conflict may for now be significantly different than American wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Vietnam—it has not yet drawn in U.S. ground forces in great numbers. But the Iran war shares a deeper strategic reality with these predecessors.
I Wargamed Iran for Obama. This Is the Worst-Case Scenario
Donald Trump discusses the war in Iran with CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other officials at Mar-a-Lago on Feb. 28, 2026. Photo by Daniel Torok/White House via Getty Images Earlier this week, Donald Trump was asked whether he was surprised that no one briefed him in advance that Iran might respond to an American attack by targeting Gulf countries. His response? “Nobody. Nobody.

America’s Best Chance to Transform Iran
When U.S. President Donald Trump returned to office for a second term, he inherited a historic opportunity to reshape the standoff between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, then in its 46th year. Tehran entered 2025 weaker than at any point since the 1979 revolution. Its economy continued to suffer under the weight of U.S. sanctions and mismanagement.
Sex Hormones and Repolarization Dynamics During the Menstrual Cycle in Women Treated With QT‐Prolonging Drugs
1 Introduction QT prolongation is a recognized side effect of many commonly used medications, including antiarrhythmic drugs, antibiotics, antipsychotics, antineoplastic agents, and several other medications (Rodriguez et al. 2001; Zaręba 2007). Drug-induced QT prolongation can predispose an individual to an increased risk for ventricular tachyarrhythmias including torsade de pointes (TdP), ventricular fibrillation, and sudden cardiac death (Zaręba 2007).
The Old Playbook for Talking About the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Is Dead
For years, the safe political move for Congressional candidates on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was simple: Support Israel no matter what. A small, organized and well-funded group of American Jews treated the issue as a threshold question in elections, and most candidates decided it wasn’t worth antagonizing them. The result was policy that was bad for Israel, bad for Palestinians, and didn’t reflect where most American Jews and Democratic voters actually stood.
Democrats Are Winning - But Are They Learning?
I joined J Street’s “Word on the Street Live” to discuss last week’s elections and what’s next. I talked about how important it is to understand that our elections are decided not by hard partisans, but by a group of people who are increasingly dissatisfied with the way the political system and economy has been delivering for them in their lives.
Hamas and Netanyahu Are Working Together Again
Three weeks into a ceasefire that is largely holding, the same toxic pattern that has defined Israeli-Palestinian politics for decades is reemerging. Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas – longtime adversaries on the surface – are once again feeding off each other’s extremism, weakening moderates in both societies, and steering Israelis and Palestinians toward yet another cycle of despair. Each needs the other to stay in power.
The End of “Managing the Conflict”
The war in Gaza is ending, and the ceasefire seems likely to hold. The relief is palpable, but so is the uncertainty. As Israelis and Palestinians navigate the fragile aftermath, the easy wisdom in policy circles is that nothing will fundamentally change beyond ending the fighting. The rest of Donald Trump’s twenty-point plan, skeptics say, is dead on arrival. It’s tempting to agree.

PEACE
What can I say about today’s announcement of what appears to be a deal to end the war? It is a moment of huge relief and joy. We need to remain cautious — implementation of these deals is always hard and often touch-and-go. We’re already seeing public posturing from both sides and threats to renege because the other side isn’t living up to its obligations. But this feels real. It feels like the end of the war.
Trump Will Not Save Israel from Netanyahu
Since he came to office, many—including me—hoped Donald Trump might force Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza. Trump had the leverage: his overwhelming popularity with the Israeli public, especially Netanyahu’s base, gave him unique power to pressure the prime minister by breaking with him publicly. Throughout the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump talked about wanting to end the war.

Israel Has the Power to End the War in Gaza and It Must
This weekend, growing international pressure and, for the first time, even increasing alarm in the Israeli media caused Israel’s government to take some initial steps that will hopefully begin to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
America's War With Iran
The United States has attacked Iran. Just days after suggesting he might delay any American military action for weeks, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on June 21 that U.S. aircraft had struck three Iranian nuclear sites, including the deeply buried facility at Fordow. Iranian officials confirmed that the strikes had taken place. Although Trump insisted that the sites had been “obliterated,” it remains unclear what damage the attacks have done.

Postpartum QT Prolongation in a Long QT Syndrome Type 1 Patient
1 Introduction The hereditary long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a genetic cardiac disorder characterized by prolonged ventricular repolarization and associated with ventricular arrhythmia that may cause syncope and sudden cardiac death (Goldenberg and Moss 2008). The two most common types of LQTS are LQT1 and LQT2. LQT1 is caused by mutations in the KCNQ1 gene that encodes Kv7.1—the pore-forming α-subunit of a voltage-gated potassium channel.
Trump’s visit to the Middle East represents a historic choice for Israel
President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East is noteworthy not only for the countries he is visiting in the Gulf but also because he is skipping Israel—long America’s closest ally in the region. The visit and policy actions Trump has taken over the past month indicate that his version of transactionalism and isolationism is coming for the Middle East and that Israel’s role in that vision might be marginal or contradictory.

The Gaza ceasefire is over. What’s next?
Israel resumed military operations in Gaza this week. In a rare show of bipartisan cooperation, the outgoing Biden administration worked closely with Donald Trump’s chief negotiator, Steve Witkoff, on a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that took effect in the days leading up to Trump’s inauguration. As part of the agreement, Hamas agreed to—over the course of six weeks—release 25 hostages (including two Americans), five Thai nationals, and the bodies of eight Israelis killed during the Oct.
ALERT: Trump and Vance berate Zelensky, kick him out of White House
Never before have we witnessed such a grotesque display of bullying in the Oval Office by a president and vice president of the United States. Berating a democratic ally for the temerity not to sacrifice his own country to Donald Trump’s idol, Vladimir Putin.
Is the Gaza Ceasefire about to Collapse?
This upcoming weekend marks a pivotal moment in Gaza ceasefire negotiations. Phase 1 of the agreement between Israel and Hamas—negotiated by Qatar, Egypt, and the Biden Administration, with strong cooperation from Trump’s team days before his inauguration—is ending. If the parties can agree on a next phase it could lead to an end to the war. The much more likely scenarios, however, are either a resumption of the conflict or a temporary extension of the ceasefire.
What We Could Have Done Differently on Gaza
As part of my writing, I think it’s important to evaluate as honestly as possible the policies of the Biden-Harris Administration during the 15 months after October 7th. This is my first attempt. As I do that, I want to state up front that making decisions in the middle of a war with imperfect information is incredibly hard. What I saw was a lot of dedicated people who were trying to do the right thing and were working from a position of good faith even if I’m sure we made plenty of mistakes.
Prime Minister Daylight Comes to Washington
Today Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will bask in the glow of being the first foreign leader to visit the White House since President Trump’s inauguration. This visit is for him the culmination of a 15-year strategy that has fundamentally reshaped the U.S.-Israel alliance from one undergirded by bipartisan unity to one bound by his and Trump’s right-wing politics.
Trump’s Foreign Aid Spending Freeze - a Combination of Chaos and Cruelty
In the barrage of executive edicts and harmful week one actions by the Trump Administration, one of the most damaging has been the approach to “immediately pause new obligations and disbursements” of funding for 90 days for all foreign aid. This order is already harming U.S. national interests and will likely result in thousands losing their jobs. People could die. It is a brutally inefficient way to run a government. President Trump was always clear about his priorities.
A Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Deal
This is not the first column I expected to write for The Contrarian. I presumed it would be my personal story and how I’ve wrestled with issues associated with Israel, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the Middle East. Instead, I am thrilled that after fifteen months of agony in Israel and in Gaza, my first piece is about an agreement on a ceasefire and a hostage deal. The agreement will be broken into three phases.
Low Magnetic Fields Stimulate Cardiac Mitochondrial Bioenergetics with a Bell-Shaped Response: Possibly Via a Radical Pair Mechanism
Abstract Studies have shown that low magnetic fields (LMFs) of less than 1 x 10-3 Tesla (T) affect numerous biological events, including bacteria and plant growth, bird migration, and human brain activity. On a cellular level, LMFs affect ion channel activities, intracellular Ca2+ concentrations, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) generation. However, the mechanisms that could account for these effects are controversial.

Center for a New American Security (en-US)
Part of Middle East Security The steady and gradual alignment of Israeli and Gulf Arab interests publicly culminated in the 2020 Abraham Accords. Diplomatic and mil-to-mil relations between Israel and its neighbors continue to expand and will likely further expand to new nations as the next generation of Arab leaders ascends. For decades, U.S. engagement in the Middle East has been defined by its steady and outsized military presence and posture in the region.
The Lessons of 9/11 Can Help the U.S. Dismantle Hamas
Hamas's savage attack on Israel on October 7 has pulled the world’s attention back to the menace of international terrorism. Although it did not disappear in the twenty-two years since al Qaeda attacked New York City and Washington, D.C., it had appeared to recede as U.S. and coalition forces degraded al Qaeda and its progeny. And the threat is not just against Israel and Israelis.

A New Nuclear Deal With Iran Shouldn’t Be Accompanied By Terrorist Legitimization
Iran has a new demand for U.S. diplomats as they conclude what will hopefully be the final round of negotiations for a new nuclear agreement later this month: Remove the 2019 U.S. foreign terrorist organization (FTO) designation on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC). The United States should reject this demand, even if it risks Iranian noncompliance with negotiations. Removing the terrorist stigma from the IRGC will embolden Iranian proxies and anger regional allies.
When Less Is More
Executive Summary For the past 20 years, the U.S. military has invested heavily in the Middle East. Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump both attempted to shift assets out of the region and put a greater focus on the Indo-Pacific, but both were drawn back into the Middle East.
