1 INTRODUCTION Children laugh, speak and cry—this omnipresence in the articulation of joy, pain, pleasure and resistance makes the perioral region to one of the most vulnerable areas concerning child abuse and neglect (CAN). Physical violence against children directs in 65 up to 75% to the head—especially to the orofacial area.1 Therefore, dentists might be often the first medical professionals able to detect CAN and to initiate measures protecting children against further violence or abuse.

1. Introduction Dental radiographs are valuable diagnostic aids for oral healthcare in children and adolescents. They add important findings to the clinical examination and help to more comprehensively diagnose and monitor oral diseases and evaluate traumata or tooth development and pathologies. Intraoral radiographs, one of the most common procedures in dentistry, are executed with the image detector placed intraorally and the radiation source extraorally.
