DNA from Legionella spp. is prevalent, but culturable Legionella spp. are rare in New York City's well-maintained water distribution system. 1 INTRODUCTION Legionella are Gram-negative, typically rod-shaped Gammaproteobacteria in the family Legionellaceae. Certain species within this genus cause legionellosis, which refers to both Legionnaires' disease (a type of serious pneumonia) and Pontiac fever (a milder respiratory disease) (Fields et al., 2002).
