1 Introduction A fundamental question about biotic response to climate change is whether demographic decline will be slow enough to allow for adaptation by natural selection (Bell 2013). One important constraint on the rate of adaptation is generation time, while accelerating climate change is rapidly transforming environmental conditions. Climate change is intensifying arid conditions due to rising temperatures and reduced rainfall in many parts of the world (Hatin et al. 2019).
