Introduction Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with no available disease modifying treatment.1 It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease globally, affecting over 8.5 million people with a prevalence between 1% and 2% in the population above 65 years of age.2-4 There is currently an urgent need for an improved understanding of the molecular disease mechanisms and novel biomarkers to stratify patients and track disease progression.
