Jailing people simply because they lack money does not make communities safer. The money bail system bases freedom on wealth instead of risk, allowing some dangerous individuals to go free while others remain locked up only because they cannot pay. With high bail amounts and widespread financial insecurity, hundreds of thousands of legally innocent people sit in jail before trial, often losing jobs, housing, and family stability.

By needlessly incarcerating people so that they lose their jobs, housing, and community ties, a money bail system makes communities less safe. It is indisputable that safety, not wealth, should determine who stays in jail and who is released pending trial. Yet the United States’s money bail system does exactly the opposite.
