Roots and early routes of neuroendocrinology - Cell and Tissue Research
Abstract Carl C. Speidel (1919) and Ernst Scharrer (1928) were privileged witnesses of the encounter between neurons and hormones, a biological phenomenon that had been occurring in nature during millions of years of evolution, as Berta Scharrer started to unfold since 1935 on. The story of neurosecretion is intimately associated to that of the hypothalamus, such a “marvellous region”, as Wolfgang Bargmann (1975) called it. This story started more than two millennia ago.

From gestational chronodisruption to noncommunicable diseases: Pathophysiological mechanisms of programming of adult diseases, and the potential therapeutic role of melatonin
1 INTRODUCTION The regular cycles of light and darkness play a vital role in synchronizing the body's circadian rhythms, originating an internal temporal order of physiological functions such as sleep-wake cycles, hormone secretion, metabolism, immune function, and others. However, in modern urban societies, these cycles are often disrupted due to factors like artificial nighttime lighting, irregular work schedules, and frequent travel across time zones.
Frontiers | Maternal melatonin treatment rescues endocrine, inflammatory, and transcriptional deregulation in the adult rat female offspring from gestational chronodisruption
Introduction In urbanized societies, regular light/dark cycles are threatened, bringing about the disarray of the internal temporal order of circadian physiological functions, called chronodisruption (Erren and Reiter, 2009; Bonmati-Carrion et al., 2014), affecting wellbeing from gestation to adulthood (Bagci et al., 2020; Hsu and Tain, 2020b; Torres-Farfan et al., 2020).
