Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly recognized as a major global challenge with implications across the One Health spectrum for human, animal and environmental health.1 Initiatives to address AMR are increasingly taking the form of strategies and policies aimed at reducing antimicrobial use (AMU) in both the human and animal health sectors,2–4 leading to a growing interest in the antibiotic prescribing practices of doctors and veterinarians.

Avian influenza viruses (AIV) of the H9N2 subtype have become widespread in Western Africa since their first detection in 2017 in Burkina Faso. However, the genetic characteristics and diffusion patterns of the H9N2 virus remain poorly understood in Western Africa, mainly due to limited surveillance activities.
