During the Jim Crow era, Black people in the United States were legally excluded from using the same bathrooms as white people—a segregation highly visible through signs outside bathrooms that stated “Whites Only.” Sixty years later, transgender people in the United States are facing a similar form of legal exclusion from public facilities, albeit without the placards.

Since marriage equality became legal in Massachusetts in 2004, thanks to the landmark Goodridge v. Department of Public Health decision, I have officiated more than 250 LGBTQ+ weddings as a minister. Each ceremony has been an honor. During an interview marking Massachusetts’s twentieth anniversary of marriage equality in 2024, a reporter asked to see photos of the LGBTQ+ weddings I had officiated—I had hundreds.

Why LGBTQ+ People of Color Are Building Their Own Spaces of Joy, Health, and Resistance June is Pride Month for LGBTQ+ communities nationwide—and parades abound. As we all rev up each June for Pride, so, too, do the fault lines of race, gender identities, class, and more. This Pride Month also serves as a reminder that the struggle for LGBTQ+ civil rights is far from over, particularly amid the surge of anti-trans legislation across the country.
