1. INTRODUCTION In 1901, patients at the London Hospital (now the Royal London Hospital) were treated to an open-air concert by American stage actress Edna May (Fig. 1). The scene, with patients, nurses and doctors sprawled out on the grass, sitting in wheelchairs and perched on wooden chairs in the hospital gardens is memorialised in a post card (Survey of London, 2019). The concert is a dot on the vast timeline of Whitechapel's history.
