1 Introduction Crop residue decomposition represents a vital process in recycling nutrients and maintaining soil organic matter (SOM) stocks in agricultural systems (Finn et al. 2017; Yansheng et al. 2020). Management practices such as the implementation of efficient rotations and optimal fertilisation can impact the crop residue quantity and quality, affecting the soil microbial pool and organic matter formation and stabilisation (Arcand et al. 2016; Córdova et al. 2018).
