INTRODUCTION Despite the high prevalence and burden of mental disorders, knowledge of the underlying biological pathways remains limited. A clear understanding of the pathoetiology of these conditions is important for improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies. There is a large amount of evidence showing mental disorders are accompanied by a variety of physiological dysregulations, that in turn may be associated with societal determinants such as poverty and discrimination.
