1 INTRODUCTION The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (Article 3) emphasises that physical and mental integrity must be respected (European Union, 2012). Since restraining measures violate this high good of humanity, they may only be used as a last resort. Nevertheless, restraints are currently used in all areas of healthcare (Barbui et al., 2021; Gunawardena & Smithard, 2019; Scheepmans et al., 2020).
