Isabelle Roughol’s Biography

I'm a journalist and newsroom leader working at the intersection of tech and media, editorial and product, entrepreneurialism and management. I am driven to transform our industry for the future, develop and mentor our people, build compassionate and innovative organizational cultures, and put readers and communities at the center of it all. I also have a love of storytelling and creative work, and refuse to pick one or the other.

I am currently building Borderline, a media company for defiant global citizens, and developing a writing project (to be announced). I also teach and consult on an ad hoc basis with organizations advancing the journalism industry, and I serve on the board of the Public Interest News Foundation. At the start of 2020, I left LinkedIn, where I worked 8 happy years, for a breather and a time of creative recharge. Then the world went a little haywire...

I joined LinkedIn as a temp in 2012 and rose to be right hand to the editor in chief. I led our fast editorial growth outside the US, hiring and managing a team across Brazil, France, Germany, the UK, India, China, Japan and Australia, and developing management and product expertise on top of my journalistic training. Previous jobs included being a newspaper reporter in Cambodia, keeping the foreign desk at Le Figaro running at night, and launching a New York Times weekly section in French.

My career has been about building bridges between countries (I've worked in five) and industries. I love translating between worlds that don’t understand one other, which is really just an extension of my first love as a foreign reporter. I've built and managed strong teams where, first and foremost, people are good to one another and lead with their values. I'm an unapologetic geek and hope to learn something new every day of my life. I'm online too much but there's a hardback book in me somewhere. "Curious by profession." (Watch 'Jules et Jim'.)

I live in London with (once) frequent stops in New York and Paris. Places I've called home include New Jersey, Missouri, Cambodia, Australia, and many parts of my native France. I’m committed to my current projects but open to chatting about opportunities in editorial leadership. I'm curious what the next thing that keeps me up at night will be...
